How to Grow Asparagus

By Terry Blackburn Asparagus is a perennial; I think it is an acquired taste but many would disagree believing it to a delicacy and this is reflected in the price of shop bought spears. Therefore if you like asparagus this is precisely why it is well worth growing. To grow this vegetable it does require special treatment and a little patience. Since it is to remain in the same spot for many years, the ground must be well prepared before planting. Soil Preparation Asparagus requires a sandy loam as this soil warms up quickly in the spring because of their low moisture content. This will stimulate the plant into growth, so that the asparagus sticks can be cut early. It requires some protection against cold northeast winds; erecting some type of barrier either permanent or otherwise will protect the plants and give them shelter. Prepare the ground by digging to a spade’s depth in the autumn and adding well-rotted compost and manure at the rate of a large bucketful to the sq. yd leave the soil rough over winter. In late March begin by forking over the soil 3 or 4 in. (76mm-101mm) deep. Apply fish manure with a 6 per cent potash fertilizer at 4 oz. (120g) to the sq. yd. This dressing is appropriate each spring until the asparagus bed is exhausted, which could be up to 20 years or more. Top dress each October with well-rotted compost and manure. The intended asparagus bed must be completely free of weeds. Planting Asparagus roots are thick and succulent but dry out quickly. Therefore, when you buy your plants soak them in water for a day and then put them out into the garden covered in damp sacks, taking great care not to expose the roots to the air more than is necessary. You can buy asparagus crowns (root clumps), which are one, two or three years old; naturally the one-year-old crowns are cheapest. Planting should take place during late March early April, just as soon as the soil is dry and friable; never plant when it is wet and the soil sticky. Cut out trenches 6 in. (15cm) deep and 6 in. wide, 3 ft. (90cm) apart. Remove the plants from their damp sacks and plant them 2- ft. (75cm) apart, as quickly as possible so that they do not dry. Place them into the bottom of the trenches, spreading the roots out carefully so that they radiate evenly all round the crowns. Cover them with 3 in. (76mm) of good soil, firming this with the back of your spade. The trench should be filled up gradually during the summer as the plant grows; by October the ground should be level. The roots need to become established in the first year, during the second year let the fern grow well so that good crowns are built up for these will produce good shoots early the following season. General Care Keep down the weeds, this is extremely important for the asparagus does not itself produce any weed-smothering foliage. By November, the fern will have died back, they should not be cut back until then, as the plants need their ferny leaves with which to store up energy for the following year. Any foliage that remains at this time can be then trimmed to tidy the bed, leaving an inch or so above ground level. Top dressings of fertilizers and manures can be given each year at this time. Harvesting Allow the plant to establish and gain in size before the spears are harvested. Wait until the plants are in their third year before taking the spears; then they can be cut when they are about 4-6 in. (101mm-152mm) high. Cut them below the soil surface, down to 2 or 3 in. (50mm-76mm) using a long narrow knife or a special asparagus knife, which has a serrated edge. Take great care not to damage the crown. Spears can be cut every two days in the early part of the season, around May time. The season is relatively short, cutting should stop at the end of June, and the remaining shoot should then be allowed to go on to produce asparagus fern. The fern itself should be cut down to within 6 in.(15cm) of the soil level just before the berries ripen; this will then prevent the ripened fruits falling to the ground, scattering useless seeds because the aim it to cultivate only the chosen “pedigree” crowns. The Big Fat Juicer You Can Count On

By Dave Robinson The juicer has come a long way from the simple utensil that your parents used to squeeze orange juice from an orange when you were younger. In fact, it is now one of the most essential appliances for many kitchens across the country. We have learned so much in the way of why we need to consume juices of various types. Now, with technology, we have some of the best equipment to make drinking that juice easier, more flavorful, and even more cost effective. All this from a juicer? Count on it and so much more. There are several brands of juicers on the market, but what you will find is excellent features in all of them. Many of them offer a wide range of essential settings in which to use them. And, they all have something else in common as well. They deliver high quality juice just the way you want them to. A Closer Look At The Options Taking a closer look at juicer options will tell you that there is much to consider in your purchase. Dont just head to the local store to purchase whatever they have on their shelves. On the web, you will find a wide range of high quality products that really will knock your socks off in quality and cost. Some of these machines are so easy to use that it is no harder to squeeze a glass of juice as it is to open the carton to pour some pre made juice. Some of the things that you will find useful in juicers are the following. Did you know that many of the juicers you can purchase can be purchased to allow different types of pulp settings? Some will allow you to add ice to them to create more of an iced treat than juice? Others will provide you with a quick glass of juice that really pulls as much juice out of the fruit that is possible. Still there are more features. Some of these will help you to allow for easy clean up. Others will help you to mix various fruits to create smoothies and shakes. Why Purchase A Juicer? Many people do not get it. Why purchase a juicer when you can purchase juice already squeezed? The simple fact of the matter is that juice is full of essential nutrients that your body needs. When it is stored, these products break down and offer less of a value to your diet. Likewise, they also lose their flavor the longer they sit. Freshly squeezed juice is tastier and healthier for you. Take a few minutes to check out the options that are out there. Find those juicers that offer just what you want to gain from that orange this time. And, look for easy to use equipment that is also easy to clean and maintain. What a great way to start the day with a juicer to give you the best juice out there. About The Author Dave Robinson For more information on juicers visit our site: http://www.fitnessbuff.info. Asthma Treatment Do You Need It?

By Paul Callis Asthma is on the increase every year, so we should be made more aware of the causes and what to do in order to prevent ourselves or children of the next generations from becoming asthmatics. As many as 15-20 million people in the USA alone have asthma, with a third of these teenagers and younger. Most of us have heard of Asthma, but have no idea were it is from or why it is called that. The word asthma is a Greek word basically translating as the verb to pant. It can be contracted at any age, and is thought to be heredity. It is basically a lung disease, the leaves you short of breath due to the lungs inflaming, in turn causing breathing airways to narrow. Many sufferers can locate the problem and help prevent the asthmatic attacks from taking place, but sadly there is no guaranteed cure for asthma. Therefore asthma treatment may be the way forward for most sufferers. Most common causes are thought to be dust, smoke or pollen. Even perfumes, chemicals, animal hair, and in some cases stress and nerves. Years ago many experts believed exercise help aggravate and cause asthma, although in more modern times and after more research, it is recommended on a daily basis, to help keep the body in a fit and healthy condition. If exercising with asthma, you should consult with your doctor what levels of exercise you can cope with and what you should do in order to exercise without having an attack. Often correct warm ups and warm downs should be sufficient. Asthma is quite often frightening to either the sufferer or whoever is watching an asthmatic attack. During normal breathing, the muscles that surround the airways are relaxed, and air moves freely, where as asthmatics experience the muscles tightening around these airways, causing air not to move as freely. The slightest upset, stress, shock or anything can trigger an asthmatic attack due to asthmatics having very sensitive airways. If you see anyone having an attack or experience one yourself you should sit leaning forward, and if possible place something warm on your chest to help relax your chest muscles. Take your inhaler or have a plastic bag to ease your breathing. If you are asthmatic you should definitely not be smoking. Reducing asthma can be helped by having ginkgo biloba, mullein, licorice root, marshmallow root or slippery elm in your weekly diet. A Morning Smoothie to Help You Stop Constipation

By Rudy Silva Chronic constipation can be hard to stop or elimination, since the colon have become weak. In most cases it will have to be retrained on how to have a bowel movement. For those of you that have mild constipation, here is a morning smoothie that will help activate your colon. This smoothie is packed with nutrients that your body will use to regenerate your colon and body. I have been making this smoothie for a few years. I make enough to drink right away and to put into my thermos to drink around 10am. When I make this drink I just start putting things in the blender without measuring. You can do the same and make adjustments as you go. * one peeled banana * 4-5 strawberries or other type of berries, or fruits * one tablespoon of lecithin granules * one two teaspoons of flax seed oil * half and half almond milk and apple juice * in a coffee grinder, grind up around a teaspoon or less of the following: * brown sesame seeds – are high in lecithin, vitamin C, E, and Calcium. They improve liver function and help in constipation * sunflower seeds – are high protein, Calcium, and iron. They are one of the best natural foods which feeds the entire body. * flax seeds – are high in fiber and provide bulk for your stools. * almonds – use around 6-7 or more. They are high in Calcium, Phosphorus and have some B-vitamins. Only eat a few. They are high in calories. After grinding the seeds, place them in the blender and blender everything for about 3-4 minutes. If you need a little sweetness, you can add a small amount of honey. I find this drink plenty sweet without any honey. Sometimes I will add the powder of a few acidophilus capsules. If I dont add the almonds, I just put all the tiny seed into the blender without grinding them up. The blender will break them up. This is a powerful smoothie to give you morning power and to activate your colon to get moving. Rudy Silva has a degree in Physics and is a Natural Nutritionist. Child Safety Guides

By Milos Pesic Accidents are found to be the leading cause of death in children. Furthermore, there are basically four major causes of accidental deaths. Your child safety guides therefore, should contain materials relating to water safety, traffic safety, fire safety, and gun safety. Deaths from drowning do not go down to less than 1,500 every year. This is not counting adults yet. This leading cause of child-death is usually misunderstood by parents. Reading up on child safety guides will tell you that it is a myth to think that children will make noise if they are almost drowning. It is not true at all times that kids splash around. Oftentimes, they are too panicked to figure out what to do that most of them drown in silence. They can also drown even in a bucket full of water. Even if youre a medical practitioner with years of CPR training, awareness gained from child safety guides can help you more to prevent it from happening. Buckle up. This is one of the child safety guides that we hear so often, its amazing how people forget. Maybe some do not really forget, they are just too optimistic that nothing can go wrong. But this time, optimism is not at all encouraged. Babies need their car seats and young children need to use their seat belts even if there are adults seating in the car with them. Air bags do provide protection, but they are not to be used as an alternative to seat belts. These are mainly designed for adults, so kids are not safe near an active air bag. Child safety guides would tell you that the safest place for children to sit in the car is in the back seat, regardless if the car has no active air bags. Educating children with the child safety guides will make them aware of possible dangers resulting from playing with things like matches. Let them know how a match work and what it can do. Store them in places that children wont have access to. Do not let them go near stoves, fireplace, or lighted candles even for the briefest moment. It is not wise to let them fumble with electrical cords or sockets. Satisfy their curiosity by answering their questions and feeding them information about the hazards of fire. Some people own guns for protection. However, owning one takes a lot of responsibility. There are a lot of child safety guides that would tell you how to avoid the ugly consequences of having a gun in the house. What you thought could offer protection for you and your family could very well be the one that you will be most scared of in the end. Unless you can perfectly guarantee it wont get into the hands of your children some day, accept the fact that guns and kids dont mix. Generic Cure

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Venus_Ann] Venus Ann Why Brand the Generic? When the branded drug becomes a generic drug, what takes shape is a cure that becomes readily available for the many deprived, since the price of the drug falls drastically with the transition. Cheap Generic drugs thus become a challenge to the branded versions and with the help of internet pharmacy reaches you within no time. Online generic drugs open the box of cure that till then had been only within the reach of the branded. The reason is due to the lesser cost that goes behind the research and development of the generic as well as the stiff competition that exists between the large number of generic drug manufacturers. You now neednt have to be rich to afford the cure to diseases where the drugs had been patented. Generic solves the hurdles with the same content and the same cure as the branded. To buy generic drugs is hence to buy the cure. Pharmacy Online Online generic drugs and internet pharmacy goes hand in hand; the need for the drug is felt by the click of the mouse. There even exist methods whereby the drugs could be prescribed online with the help of active medical units in the web world. You could try visiting online France pharmacy. You could at times be advised to change the branded with a generic drug by your pharmacists. What he means is good for you since it is not the coating of the drug or the color or shape which matters rather the dosage strength, manufacturing control and the labeling that define the generic drug. This under stringent requirements is tested and inspected by the authorities to remain the same and hence there neednt be a lack of confidence in buying the generic version. For the Very Personal Moreover, when the ailment becomes too personal, as in the case of erectile dysfunction or obesity, the best that you could go for shall be the cure offered by the generic. Generic versions of Cialis and Viagra find a large number of consumers than the branded drugs. When the case calls you to have the drug at a systematic and affordable rate, the answer thus always remains with the Generic drugs. So when each time you purchase a costly drug, the wise man in you could ponder over with your pharmacist to see if the same drug holds a generic variety. If yes, then its high time you stop and throw off the branded at hand, and turn and fetch out the generic on demand. Orthotics and Your Feet

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Dobrowolski,_DPM] Christine Dobrowolski, DPM Orthotics are devices which fit into the shoe to aid the foot. “Functional orthotics” are rigid and designed to control motion and correct the function of the foot. Individuals with flatfeet, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, certain foot deformities, knee, hip and back problems may benefit from functional orthotics. “Accommodative orthotics” are soft and designed to reduce pressure and prevent excess friction. Diabetics and those with a loss of sensation or circulation in their feet will benefit from accommodative orthotics. Both types of orthotics are custom made by taking a mold of the foot. Functional Orthotics The goal of the functional orthotic is to improve the mechanics of the foot, control the abnormal motion in the foot, decrease the pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back and to add support. The orthotic should make standing, walking, jogging or running more comfortable. The orthotic must be rigid to help control the motion in the foot and add support. If the orthotic is soft, the weight of the body would collapse the device and it would no longer function. Abnormal motion is typically in the form of pronation. Pronation is the rolling in of the foot and collapse of the arch. The motion starts at the rearfoot, or heel area. When the heel turns in, it allows the arch to collapse. This puts undue stress on the ligaments and tendons in the arch area and contributes to the development of tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, bunions and hammertoes. The functional orthotic helps to control the abnormal motion in the rearfoot. This is accomplished by taking a mold of the foot in its neutral position. The neutral position is the position the foot should be in when walking. When standing, the over-pronated foot is in the uncorrected position. The mold of the foot should be taken with the patient sitting so the foot can be placed in the neutral position. The molds are sent to a lab and scanned into a computer. A reverse image is produced and the computer generates an image of the foot in neutral position. The computer adjusts the image based on the corrections recommended by your podiatrist. A model of the foot is then cut out, in some cases out of wood. The orthotic material is pressed over the foot model and the orthotic is created. The most common material is polypropylene, but other materials, such as graphite are used. In some cases, hand-made molds are created out of plaster. This was the classic way orthotics were made until newer technology made the process much less labor intensive. Functional orthotics are a successful treatment for many problems affecting the lower extremity. In a recent article in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 75% of patients surveyed had good to excellent results from functional orthotics. This includes 17% who felt the orthotics “cured” their pain. Less than 10% had no relief. The most commonly treated condition in the study was a painful heel. Over 20% of patients surveyed were treated for a painful heel and 20% were treated for a painful arch. Fourteen percent of the individuals were using orthotics for flatfeet. Other conditions treated with orthotics were knee, hip and back pain, foot arthritis, bunions and high arches. Tendonitis was not specifically evaluated. Individuals with plantar fasciitis (heel and arch pain) who also have flatfeet usually respond best to orthotics. The plantar fascia is a ligament type structure on the bottom of the foot which helps to hold up the arch. When the foot collapses, the weight of the body stresses the ligament and results in tearing and inflammation. This results in plantar fasciitis. These individuals typically respond well to orthotics in combination with other treatments. Certain types of tendonitis respond well to orthotics and other types require orthotics. Posterior tibial tendonitis is the tearing and inflammation of the tendon that helps to hold up the arch. When this tendon is overstressed by arch collapse it cannot heal. Orthotics are essential in the treatment of this condition. Individuals with high arches may require orthotics as well, but they do not respond as well. Orthotics can help slow the progression of bunions and hammertoes, but they will not prevent this process. Orthotics may help with some pain at a bunion, but they will not “cure” the bunion. When the motion in the foot is contributing to the problem, orthotics are generally recommended. If the foot is stable and does not require support, the bunion, hammertoe, neuroma, tendonitis or even plantar fasciitis may not require custom made orthotics for treatment. These individuals may do well with a pre-fabricated orthotic. Accommodative Orthotics Diabetics can develop numbness and loss of circulation in the feet. This numbness and circulation loss puts them at risk for developing open sores on the feet called ulcerations. To help prevent excess rub and friction in certain areas on the feet, accommodative orthotics are recommended. Diabetics who do not have numbness or circulation loss (as diagnosed by their doctor) do not need to have accommodative orthotics. If the foot has a deformity, like a bunion or hammertoe, then accommodative orthotics are necessary. Accommodative orthotics are made from many different types of material. Some are made of a foam type material, others made from cork and others have covers ranging from soft spongy material to leather. The type of material depends on the type of foot. Many accommodative orthotics, made for diabetics, have two or more layers that form around the foot once they are worn. Three pairs are dispensed every year and they are replaced every 4 months. Other materials are longer lasting. A mold of the foot is taken by stepping into a foam box. In this case, it is important to take the mold standing, so that the orthotic can be made to form around the foot. The Cost Many insurance companies cover orthotics for certain diagnoses. The most commonly covered diagnoses are plantar fasciitis (heel and arch pain), flatfeet and diabetes. Many insurance companies cover the orthotics at 80%. This means the patient is responsible for 20% of the cost unless they have a secondary insurance. If the deductible has not been met, then the amount is applied to the deductible and the patient must pay the full amount. Orthotics are not cheap. They range from $250 to $600. Medicare covers orthotics for diabetics with neuropathy (numbness of the feet). Medicare does not cover orthotics for any other type of foot problem. Secondary insurance will not cover orthotics if Medicare does not cover them. Podiatrists most commonly prescribe orthotics, but pedorthotists, orthotists, physical therapists and sometimes orthopedists will also provide orthotics. How Do You Carry Water While Fishing?

By Trevor Kugler This sounds like a simple enough proposition, but if you’re anything like me, carrying water while fishing can be a bit of a pain in the butt. You see, a fishing trip for me involves a lot of walking. I like to hike along the river and explore new areas. This involves covering quite a bit of ground. In an average fishing trip for me, I would say I cover at least four miles round trip. This amount of walking requires that I carry quite a bit of water with me, especially on hot/sunny days. I found that a single bottle of water just wouldn’t cut it, so I started jamming my vest with as many water bottles as I could. This was incredibly bulky and uncomfortable, but it’s what I did. Then a snowboarding friend of mine turned me onto the answer. It was so simple, yet I had never heard of this before. It’s called a hydration pack. Snowboarders, mountain bikers, and cyclists have been using hydration packs for years, but they were still new to me. So, taking the advice of my friend, I used a hydration pack on my next fishi8ng trip..Problem solved my friends! It was awesome. I had water for the entire day, and got so used to the pack itself, that I forgot it was even there. You see, you wear most hydration packs on your back like a small backpack. But this backpack carries your water and even helps keep the water cold! A hydration pack is, without question, the best way that I’ve ever seen to carry water while fishing. You should give one a try, because they sure beat carrying multiple bottles of water with you, and all of the problems that come along with it. I promise that once you give a hydration pack a try on your next fishing trip, the question of how you carry water while fishing, will be answered forever.
